Kasuri and Shima Shikimono Rug

Kasuri and Shima Shikimono Rug

Shikimono like this one were used around a sunken hearth to insulate from the cold floor.  The rug is made from multiple layers of indigo cotton Kasuri tie-resisted cotton fabric on one side and Shima stripe on the other, with additional katazome and Shima in between.   Boro is a Japanese form of recycling coming from an economic necessity in which fabric is patched on the reverse side to preserve its usability.  The beauty comes from the unintentional artistry created from layers of mending.  Wear is consistent with age and use.
